The Wireless 411 Privacy Act (S. 1963 and H.R. 3558)
A new cell phone directory will be available probably in early 2005.
It could give access to your cell phone number to everyone - including telemarketers.
There are several reasons why your cell phone may not be affected by all this.
Participating cell phone carriers have decided to let their customers opt in or out of the 411 listing, just like consumers can do for their landline phones.
Federal laws require carriers to obtain permission from existing customers before including them on the list.
New customers however may need to actively opt out of the list to prevent being included.
The laws are based on the fact that cell phone customers would incur costs in dollars and used minutes if attacked by telemarketers.
If it makes you feel better, you can put your mobile phone number on the Do Not Call registry by calling (888) 382-1222 or going to
Registering only takes a minute, is in effect for 5 years and will possibly save you money (definitely frustration)!
Make sure you register now!
Registering on the Do Not Call list will not prevent your number from being listed on the mobile phone directory.
That is between you and your wireless company as mentioned above.
Registering on the Do Not Call List will provide and extra measure of protection that might be needed now that land line numbers are portable to wireless phones.
Why the Wireless 411 directory?
The major wireless carriers claim consumers want it!
A small percentage of cell phone customers are businesses that only use cell phones and do not use any land lines.
Some of them would like to be found in the Wireless 411 Directories.
The real reason the industry wants the list is that at $1 per inquiry, they expect to have an annual multi Billion dollar source of additional revenue selling the information on the lists.
